Picacho Peak, AZ

Picacho Peak is a steep ominous looking peak you can see for miles as you approach from either direction on I10 just north of Tucson.

It was used in the past as a beacon because it can be seen from so far away.

During one of our spring trips to the warmth of Arizona we determined that we needed to climb Picacho Peak. The area surrounding the peak is an Arizona State Park with several hiking trails two of witch approach the summit from different sides. We parked in the lot below which is on the east side of the peak and followed the Hunters trail which approaches from the east and winds up through the saddle between the two ends of the mountain

Hiking in the heat of the desert required lots of water, a hat, plenty of sunscreen, and sunglasses

Once you are through the saddle the trail descends steeply along the west side of the peak where it joins the other summit trail. Permanent cable railings are installed to help navigate steep slippery rocks in many places along the trail. Without the cables strung along the trail this would be a dangerous climb, and unreachable to most hikers.

This part of the trail sure looks interesting!

Gloves are a necessity as you slide your hands over the cables climbing some of the vertical rock surfaces.

Don’t look down!

Don’t stick your hands into any holes or this little critter might have an easy lunch.

Once on the summit there is a large flat area with good views in all directions.

Looks like some irrigation going on out there.

Back down some of the cable runs as we work our way to the other side of the mountain. To check out the other peak.

Back in the saddle on the way down from the second peak is a sign and a bench giving some of the history of the peak.

Anytime someone build a bench on a mountain with a view you should sit on it. Its only polite!
